J & G Mossman Ltd, are one of Scotland’s oldest family-run Monumental Sculptors, the business having been established by William Mossman. He was the son of a family of Gold and Silversmiths in Edinburgh who had practised their craft in the City for over 300 years. (John Knox’s house was at one time the property of the family.)
William Mossman first set up his business in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, moving later to Cathedral Street. His two sons, John and George, were trained by their father as sculptors while a third son, William, became an Architect and joined the firm with his brothers in 1832. At that time the Merchants House in Glasgow had secured ground for burying – now the Glasgow Necropolis – and the Mossman brothers’ undoubted fame and talent spread throughout Britain. Much of the work in Glasgow Necropolis and sculptural work on both public buildings and memorials was undertaken by Mossman and the business
